Security Officer Requirements in New York

  • In New York State, security guards are registered with the Department of State, Division of Licensing Services. After approval, the guard’s ID card is printed by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Source
  • New York requires an 8-hour pre-assignment training course before registration, 16 hours of on-the-job training within 90 days of employment as a security guard, and an 8-hour annual in-service course each calendar year while registered. Registration and training requirements are published by the New York Department of State. Source
  • Armed guards in New York must complete a 47-hour firearms course before they can be registered as armed guards, plus an 8-hour annual firearms course each calendar year. Source
