Security Officer Requirements in Maine

  • Contract security companies need a state license from the Commissioner of Public Safety. The applicant or company agent must be at least 18, a U.S. citizen or resident alien, and of good moral character. Source
  • Security guards must be at least 18. A conviction for a crime punishable by a year or more, or three or more lesser convictions within the past five years, disqualifies a guard. Source
  • Maine does not issue individual guard cards. Instead, the licensed company must complete a background investigation on each guard and file a signed statement with the state within 60 days after the guard starts work. Source
  • The company’s background statement must be filed with the state before a guard may wear, carry or use a firearm on duty. Source
  • A new contract security company application costs $121, which is a $100 application fee plus a $21 background check fee, with $300 more due on approval. Renewal costs $221. Source
