Managed security services in Rwanda

Kigali is the commercial and conference centre of Rwanda, with offices, banks and hotels in the central business district around Kigali City Tower and in Kimihurura around the Kigali Convention Centre and Kigali Heights. Embassies, residences and restaurants are located in Kiyovu, Kacyiru and Nyarutarama, and manufacturing and logistics sites operate in the Kigali Special Economic Zone.

Security considerations in Rwanda

A program in Rwanda usually covers offices, retail units and hotels in Kigali, with some sites in secondary towns or near the national parks. Office buildings and hotels in Kigali generally screen visitors and vehicles at the entrance, so officers need post orders that set out how they work with building security. Kinyarwanda is spoken by almost everyone, and English, French and Kiswahili are also official languages; English is the main language of business.

Kigali hosts international conferences and sporting events at the Kigali Convention Centre and BK Arena throughout the year, which raises demand for officers at short notice. Gorilla trekking brings visitors to Musanze, and Rubavu on Lake Kivu is a weekend destination. Coverage plans should include relief officers, reinforcement for event periods, and agreed procedures for access control and coordination with venue security.

Frequently asked questions

Does MGP hold its own security licence in Rwanda?

No. MGP does not hold a private security licence in Rwanda. Officers are employed by vetted Rwandan security companies that hold the required licences, and MGP manages the program, its standards and its reporting.

What languages do the officers speak?

Officers speak Kinyarwanda, and officers on client-facing posts also speak English. Where French or Kiswahili is needed, the requirement is set out in the post orders for that site and confirmed with the partner company.
