Security Officer Requirements in Texas

  • Texas security officers are licensed through the Texas Department of Public Safety Private Security Program. All noncommissioned (unarmed) security officers must complete the Level II training course and test. Source
  • Commissioned (armed) security officers must complete the Level III training course, a minimum of 45 hours including a course of fire, and demonstrate firearm proficiency within 90 days of applying. Source
  • Personal protection officers must complete the Level IV course, a minimum of 15 hours. Commissioned officers and personal protection officers must complete 6 hours of continuing education to renew. Source
