Retail Security Services
Trained officers for mall-based and specialty retail stores, working to written Post Orders and supervised in the field.
Retail Security for Mall-Based and Specialty Stores
Retail security places a trained officer at the entrance or on the sales floor to deter theft, protect staff and customers, and handle the problems a store sees every day. MGP provides this service to mall-based chains and specialty retailers. Buyers are usually store operations, asset protection or loss prevention leaders who need the same standard in one store or many.
Retail Guarding and Loss Prevention Support
These are different services. Retail guarding is a visible presence that deters problems and supports customers. Loss prevention support focuses on shrink: the officer watches for theft patterns, works alongside the client’s asset protection team and documents what was observed. Luxury boutiques and flagships are covered on our Luxury Retail Asset Protection page.
| Area | Retail Guarding | Loss Prevention Support |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Visible deterrence and safety | Reducing shrink |
| Attire | Uniform | Uniform, business attire or plainclothes |
| Focus | Entrance, floor, opening and closing | Theft indicators, ORC patterns and reporting |
Where Coverage Applies
- Mall-based stores
- Specialty and branded retail stores
- Back-of-house, stockrooms and receiving areas
- Daytime, evening and overnight coverage
What Officers Do on a Normal Shift
- Hold a visible post at the entrance or on the sales floor
- Greet customers and answer basic questions
- Support opening and closing procedures
- Watch for organized retail crime (ORC) indicators such as distraction, coordinated grab-and-run and return fraud
- Observe, report, de-escalate and escalate appropriately
- Respond to alarms, medical emergencies and disputes, and escalate early
- Document incidents on scene
ORC recognition is trained before an officer works a store floor. Attention follows observable behavior, not race, appearance, age or perceived status.
How Post Orders Are Set Up
Post Orders are written for each location around its layout, hours and risk. They set out where the officer stands, what to watch, who to report to and when to escalate. Officers review the Post Orders and complete assignment-specific training before taking post, and they refresh them each quarter.
Supervision, Reporting and Escalation
What stays constant across stores is the screening behind the officer, the supervision above them and the format of the reporting.
- The Operations Desk answers 24/7/365, and calls reach a live person in English or Spanish.
- Every shift starts with a GPS-confirmed clock-in.
- Incidents are documented on scene, time-stamped and GPS-verified, with photographs.
- Supervisors make unannounced site visits to check presentation and adherence to Post Orders.
- Coverage and incidents are reviewed with the client in a Monthly Operational Review and a Quarterly Business Review.
Retailers that need many stores run under the same standards can see our Multi-Site Security Programs page.

Officer Classification
MGP staffs posts by tier under the Officer Classification Program. Most retail entrance and access posts fit Tier I. Sales floors and loss prevention support usually call for Tier II officers, who add active shooter and de-escalation training. Armed posts are filled only with Tier III retired law enforcement officers or Tier IV off-duty officers where permitted. Tier assignments for each location are confirmed in the Statement of Work.
Limitations and Dependencies
- Officers summon law enforcement rather than intervene physically, except where both the law and the Post Orders for that assignment authorize otherwise.
- Officers support the client’s own asset protection policies. They do not replace them.
- Mall-based posts may also need to follow rules set by the property.
- Licensing and training requirements vary by jurisdiction and are maintained accordingly.
- Tier IV availability varies by jurisdiction, since some agencies do not permit off-duty work through a private firm.
Availability
MGP supports programs across the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, the United Kingdom, Ireland, continental Europe, Australia and New Zealand through its hybrid delivery model: MGP-employed officers where MGP is licensed, and vetted, locally licensed partners elsewhere, with local supervision in every market. All programs are held to the same screening, training, insurance and reporting standards. See Service Areas for current markets.
