Security Officer Requirements in Tennessee
- Tennessee security guards are licensed through Private Protective Services in the Department of Commerce and Insurance. Unarmed guards must be at least 18 and complete 4 hours of orientation training. Source
- Armed guards in Tennessee must be at least 21 and complete 16 hours of training: 4 hours of general classroom, 8 hours of firearms classroom and 4 hours of marksmanship with a minimum score of 70%. Source
- Effective January 1, 2026, Tennessee requires an enhanced armed guard registration to use approved shotguns and rifles. Source
