Off-Duty Police Officer Services

Active law enforcement officers working agency-approved off-duty assignments, and retired officers for armed and high-value posts, coordinated and supervised by MGP.

What the Service Is

Some sites call for a sworn officer’s presence: high-value deliveries, critical incident response, dignitary and VIP visits, or locations where a uniformed police presence is part of the security plan. MGP coordinates off-duty officers (Tier IV) and retired law enforcement officers (Tier III) under the same screening, supervision and reporting standards as every MGP post.

Where the Service Is Available

MGP coordinates off-duty officer coverage nationwide across the United States, and in other countries where local law and the police agency allow it. National retailers use the service to add a uniformed police presence at stores in many markets under one program, with the same Post Orders, reporting and supervision at every location. Where an agency does not permit off-duty work through a private firm, MGP helps the client arrange coverage directly with the agency and coordinates it on site, as in New York City through the NYPD Paid Detail Unit.

Tier IV: Off-Duty Officers

  • Active law enforcement officers in agency-approved off-duty status.
  • Sworn status verified before assignment, with agency training and certifications on file.
  • Typical assignments: critical incident response and dignitary and VIP protection.
  • Availability varies by jurisdiction, since some agencies do not permit off-duty work through a private firm.

Tier III: Retired Officers

  • Retired law enforcement officers with 20+ years of sworn service.
  • Armed license, Tier II training and annual firearms qualification.
  • Typical assignments: executive protection support and high-value asset protection.

When to Consider It

  • High-value merchandise movements and deliveries.
  • Product launches, store openings and events with large crowds.
  • Executive, dignitary and VIP visits.
  • Sites with a history of serious incidents, after a risk review.

How Assignments Are Managed

  • Post Orders are written for each location around its layout, hours and risk.
  • Officers check in through GPS-confirmed clock-in, and incidents are documented on scene, time-stamped and GPS-verified.
  • The Operations Desk answers 24/7/365.
  • Tier assignments for each location are confirmed in the Statement of Work.

Limitations

Off-duty officers work under their agency’s rules for secondary employment, which can limit locations, hours and duties. Armed posts are assigned only after a review of the site’s risk, lease and insurance requirements. For luxury boutiques, MGP generally recommends unarmed officers focused on deterrence and client service. See the Officer Classification Program for all four tiers.

Off-Duty Officers in New York City

In New York City, off-duty NYPD officers are arranged through the NYPD Paid Detail Unit, not hired through a private firm. MGP helps clients set up and coordinate paid details, and supplies Tier III retired police officers. See Off-Duty and Retired Police Officers in New York City.
