Security for Construction Sites and Development Projects

MGP secures construction and development projects at every phase, protecting materials, equipment and the site perimeter while supporting the general contractor’s safety and logistics plan.

Risks That Change With Each Phase

An open lot during excavation, a steel frame with materials staged on every floor, and a fitted building weeks before turnover each carry a different risk. Theft of copper wire, tools, fixtures and heavy equipment tends to rise as higher value material arrives on site, and vacant structures attract trespassing and vandalism after hours.

MGP plans coverage with the owner’s representative and the general contractor, then adjusts posts and patrol frequency as the project moves from site work through vertical construction, fit-out and closeout.

Gate and Delivery Control

The gate is where site security and site logistics meet. Officers control vehicle and pedestrian access, check workers and visitors against the contractor’s access list or badging system, and log deliveries against the daily schedule so materials arrive where the superintendent expects them.

  • Worker and visitor sign-in and verification against approved access lists
  • Delivery logging and coordination with the site logistics plan
  • Keyholding and lockup of trailers, hoists and gang boxes when assigned
  • PPE checks at the gate when included in post orders

After-Hours and Vacant Site Protection

Much of a site’s exposure falls after hours, when work has stopped and the site is unstaffed. MGP provides overnight and weekend officers, perimeter and interior patrols, and checks of fencing, gates, scaffolding access points and equipment yards. Officers document open doors, damaged fencing, missing lock hardware and lighting failures for the superintendent’s review the next morning.

Where the project uses cameras or intrusion detection, MGP integrates its officers with the client’s GSOC or a monitoring partner’s operations center, and the post orders set the on-site check that follows each alert.

Fire Watch and Life Safety Support

Construction sites carry elevated fire risk from hot work, temporary heat and incomplete fire protection systems. NFPA 241 addresses safeguarding construction, alteration and demolition operations, and NFPA 51B covers fire prevention during welding, cutting and other hot work. When a fire protection system is impaired or a jurisdiction or insurer requires it, MGP provides dedicated fire watch officers who patrol, keep required logs and notify the fire department when needed.

Fire watch requirements are set by the authority having jurisdiction, the client’s insurer and the project’s safety plan. MGP follows those requirements and does not replace the contractor’s safety program or competent person responsibilities under OSHA’s construction standards, 29 CFR 1926.

Reporting the Project Team Can Use

Each officer works from digital post orders in PostControl, MGP’s reporting and post management technology, and files shift and incident reports with times, locations and photographs where permitted. Project managers and owners receive a consistent record they can use for insurance claims, police reports and conversations with subcontractors about site conditions.

For developers running several projects, MGP applies the same post order structure and reporting format across sites, so portfolio leaders can compare conditions without reconciling different vendors’ paperwork.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should security start on a construction project?

Many projects begin coverage at mobilization, when fencing goes up and the first equipment arrives. Others add posts when higher value materials are delivered. MGP can recommend a phased plan after reviewing the site and schedule.

Can MGP provide fire watch on a construction site?

Yes. MGP provides fire watch officers when a fire protection system is impaired or when hot work, the authority having jurisdiction or the insurer requires it. Officers follow the logging and notification requirements set for the site.

Do your officers enforce site safety rules?

Officers can check for required PPE and approved access at the gate when that is included in the post orders. The general contractor’s safety program and competent persons remain responsible for site safety under OSHA.

Can security stay on after the building is occupied?

Yes. MGP can transition coverage from construction posts to lobby, concierge or commercial security as the building moves toward turnover and occupancy.

Do you use off-duty police for construction work?

Where local rules allow, MGP can arrange Tier IV Off-Duty Law Enforcement officers for traffic control, street closures or high-risk sites. Each police department sets its own rules for off-duty assignments, so MGP confirms them before scheduling.
